ABOUT THE ROC STAR

Brooke is 19 years old. During highschool, she attended Prince Edward Collegiate Institute. She is currently going into her second year of university at Laurentian University studying Sport Psychology. She has been a long standing member at the ROC. During highschool, she won The Wellings Exceptional Youth Award in 2018 and donated all $500 of her winnings directly to the ROC. Brooke has always been passionate about sports, from soccer, volleyball, she was always on some type of court in highschool. This trend continued into university, as she was apart of many intramural teams during her first year. She also says, she is secretly an astronomy enthusiast.

HISTORY WITH THE ROC

Brooke has been a member of ROC programming and been involved with the ROC for over 10 years. She has attended as a participant, she attended clubROC for a number of ongoing years. After that, she was asked to sing and play games with the younger youth members during snack time. When she was old enough to officially volunteer, she did not miss the opportunity to do so. She was a gym leader for clubROC programming, and a soccer leader for campROC. She is now currently employed at the ROC as a Canadian Summer Jobs Student.

SKILLS LEARNED

The ROC has helped her build a variety of skills, such as initiative, problem solving, communication as well as listening and leadership. Being surrounded by kids, it has taught her to be present consistently, expect the unexpected, as well as constantly being on her toes. All of these skills are transferable, and will be beneficial to any future career.

GOING INTO THE FUTURE

Brooke enjoys helping others, and has a passion for athletics. She has found an ideal job that merges both of these passions together: a sport psychologist. Her goal is to work with professional athletes, or even an olympic team. While being involved with the ROC, she discovered she also loves to work with youth. She dreams of opening her own sport psychology practice where they would focus on helping mentally prepare youth for competitions before, during, and after. Specifically teaching the importance of the 20/80 rule, sports are 80% mental, and 20% physical. She values focusing on mental health.

FAVOURITE MEMORY/THING ABOUT THE ROC

Brooke’s favourite memory of the ROC, is when she was late for clubROC one night, as she had a rugby game the same night. When she walked into the gym, she was greeted with bright faces, kids yelling her name, and running to embrace her. When the kids left, another volunteer told her that the kids were upset by her absence. This is one of her favourite memories because it showed her how much of an impact mentors have on youth, and how much they look up to them.
